Indian Head Massage has existed for over a thousand years and is mentioned in Ayurvedic texts that date back some 4,000 yrs. IHM was passed from generation to generation, Mother to Daughter, Father to Son.

In India this form of massage concentrated purely on the scalp and hair. Have you ever wondered why Indian women always have such glossy, healthy hair? IHM is why.

The "modern" word "shampoo" comes from the Indian word, "champi" which means massage and to be "champied" was to have a head massage. Indeed, IHM is also known as Champissage.

If you go into a barbers shop (men obviously!) in India, even street barbers, you are as likely to be given a head massage with your haircut and shave.

It was Narendra Mehta who, in the early 1980's, added extra elements to the traditional form to develop the version of IHM practiced today in the West.
